The Forum UK programme is our most important platform for promoting women’s leadership and for enriching each other’s lives by sharing knowledge, ideas and intellectual capital. Our programme is the hub of all our activity and the key to providing and maintaining our sense of community.

The programme incorporates the core categories: breakfasts; behind the scenes tours; briefings; dine-arounds; special interest groups and the annual events: AGM; Jean Denton lecture; Summer Cocktail party; Christmas breakfast. In addition we look to promote the international agenda and benefits of membership of IWF through participation in the IWF programme. We hope our Forum UK 2007/8 programme will encourage networking, growth and the development of Forum for the future.

BACKGROUND TO THE SERIES

The major initiative in the 20th Anniversary Programme has been put together as a response to the research and focus groups, in which a majority of members said that they would welcome the opportunity to discuss with experts the issues around Non –Executive Director opportunities.

The dismal picture was painted at the Forum UK event held at the BT Tower in February 2010.  Forum UK members Professor Susan Vinnicombe and Hilary Sears presented the findings of two research reports (The 2009 Female FTSE 100 Report and Board Dynamics: the female perspective) which highlighted that the number of FTSE companies with female executive directors is down; the number of boards with multiple women directors is down, and it is only when there is more than one woman on a Board that they are seen as more than the token woman.  One in four companies now has an exclusively male board.  Of the 156 new appointees to FTSE boards in 2008/9 only 23 (just 14.7%) were women.  What can we do?  How can we break into this?

It is a serious and timely issue.  The first events will explore how the NED ‘space’ works.  What is the process?  What are headhunters and organizations looking for?  What are the legal obligations? And how do you match your skills and experience to a NED vacancy?

The series is kindly hosted by Linklaters

Here are details on the panel:

Peter Waine, Director, Hanson Green

Launched in 1989, Hanson Green is a leading, independent search firm, which specializes in placing non-executive directors and chairmen on the boards of listed UK and international companies.  It was one of the first firms to identify the need for professionally appointed NEDs, and its clients include FTSE 100 companies, medium sized companies, start-up enterprises preparing an initial public offering and international groups.

In 2008, Hanson Green became part of the Directorbank Group. Directorbank is another boutique recruiter, occupying a market leading niche in the private equity industry providing Chairmen, Non-Executives, Chief Executives, Finance Directors and Interims for management buyins and buyouts.

Peter Waine has worked for manufacturing companies and professional firms, both as a Director and an NED. A former CBI Director, he acquired Hanson Green with Barry Dinan in 1989. He is co-author of both The Independent Board Director, the acknowledged management book on non-executive directors, and Takeover, the acclaimed business novel, and author of The Board Game. He is a visiting Professor at both the Warwick and Cass Business Schools. He is a former trustee of the Royal Opera House and a member of the International Cricket Council.
